“Will you begin?”, 25-year-old Hania asks her mother Ewa and gazes hesitantly at the therapist. A shared history, swept under the rug for decades, will now be dug out in family therapy. In the beginning it is difficult to find the right words to describe the feelings that have been left unnamed for so many years. One therapy session at a time the surface, however, begins to crack. Differing views on experiences that affected them both begin to take a larger foothold in the conversations, and it is not necessarily easy to accept and understand the other version of the same story shared in that moment.
“You have no idea how much I love you.” A fistful of words that are said out loud purely out of love but hide a suffocating power behind them. Paweł Łoziński’s intensive film tells a lot about the problematic relationship between a mother and a daughter without revealing absolutely everything. Three shots of three different faces are enough to tell what is important. Facial expressions are often more intertwined with painful memories than the words that are spoken out loud.
