Houston, We Have a Problem!

’Even if everything is fake and we know it, it tells us so much about the social reality in which we live.’

– Slavoj Žižek

Fact: Yugoslavia hosted the world’s first international symposium on space exploration in 1967.

Fact: American astronauts from several Apollo missions visited Yugoslavia in the 1960’s.

Fact: Yugoslavia received more than 700 million dollars in financial aid from the United States during 1965 – 1969.

Also a fact: Yugoslavia’s president Josip Broz Tito was the last head of state who John F. Kennedy met before being assassinated. The same Tito who was rumoured to have poisoned Stalin.

Question: Was the United States space program in fact bought from Yugoslavia?

Houston, We Have a Problem! combines archival footage, interviews and dramatized scenes, weaving a tapestry where truth and conspiracy theory myths are happily joined

together. Once Žižek is thrown into the mix, the question of truth stops being relevant. What is relevant is that ?iga Virc’s film is a story about Yugoslavia, the paradox state of the Cold War, and its almighty ruler, Tito.
