”What kind of world would this be, if we didn’t allow ourselves to live?”, Peter Madsen asks. Life is short, and so we had better plunge in and live it to the fullest. Madsen intends to build the first Danish space rocket.
Madsen starts the project together with his friend Kristian von Bengtson, with a budget close to the cost of a small car. A handful of volunteers are also on board. The small team gets their inspiration and drive from the NASA Apollo programme, that cost hundreds of billions of dollars and employed over 400 000 people.
Filmed over a period of six years, Amateurs in Space is a documentary about Madsen and von Bengtson’s attempt to fulfil their dream. Some of their rocket tests succeed, while others fail, but the duo persistently continues forward. Madsen and von Bengtson are connected by their strong belief in hard work. However, the co-operation between two men who are both strong-willed and dedicated to their passion also turns out to endanger the entire project.
