We visit three corners of the United States. In Alaska, the once bullied Blake has finally found a loving partner in Joel. Due to Joel’s illness, the couple’s love is literally fragile, but it is Blake’s unconventional career choice that might eventually get in the way of their happiness.
In Hawaii, surfer-hippie Willie has recently become a father to a boy, but the family bliss is marred by the true identity of the baby’s biological father. In New York, Victory sings religious songs on the street with her large ensemble of siblings. John, the leader and the father of the family choir, puts their faith to the test with his behaviour.
Director Alma Har’el weaves together a tapestry of love, loyalty and love’s undoing with captivating narration, combining both documentary and fictional storytelling elements. In the scenes performed by actors, the pasts and futures of the protagonists become alive.
Har’el won the award for Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2011 with her debut feature, Bombay Beach. LoveTrue also premiered at Tribeca and has since toured the festival circuit extensively, including Toronto’s HotDocs, Karlovy Vary and London. Actor Shia LaBeouf served as the documentary’s executive producer.
