Venus

Venus consists of simple shots of Danish women in their 20s and 30s, talking openly about sex. Some of the women blush or burst into nervous giggles as they speak; others answer questions proudly, with their heads held high. One woman is open to discussing the most intimate details of her fantasies, whereas another recalls being introduced to the Bible at a very young age and learning that sex is always a sin.

The interviewees are charming, sympathetic and brave, and the room in which they sit is very clearly a safe space – you can almost feel others having sat there, too, discussing the number of sexual partners they have had. The interviews have all been filmed without judgment, and this allows the women to sit up straight and abandon any feelings of shame or fear so often connected to discussions of sex.

The most exceptional thing about Venus is the role of the camera as a witness only: it has no agenda. It does not expect or demand that the interviewees fit into simplistic categories such as vamp or virgin, straight or gay, femme or tomboy. The camera is merely a messenger, only there to record what the women want to say.
