All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception, and the Legacy of I.F. Stone

All Governments Lie was released in September 2016. It preceded Donald Trump‘s election victory, but predicted it with surprising preciseness. The film is an insightful study of the depressingly short-sighted and visionless state of the American media.

In its current state, media is not the fourth estate it should be. It is just a capitalistic mascot fed by the governmental propaganda machines. It doesn’t deserve our pity, for it reports only twisted truths and official lies. The hidden truths are never revealed by the CNN or The New York Times. Even mass graves found in U.S. soil won’t top the news threshold, if there is a funny panda video going viral.

The film was named after I.F. Stone, an independent journalist, who was a nuisance to President McCarthy as well as President Nixon. Director Michael Moore has said that he is just continuing Stone’s work.

The U.S. presidential elections of 2016 proved that disinformation has become a permanent part of the media landscape. In the Post-Snowden era only the truly independent operators can carry the banner of Free Press. As Amy Goodman, founder of the Democracy Now! television show, states: the national broadcasting companies are no better than the commercial media.

Recent events in Prime Minister Sipilä‘s Finland prove this observation to be truer than ever.
